Your Trusted Orthodontist In Fremont/Newark Explains Why Braces Cause Discomfort (And How to Fix it Fast)

At BirchTree Orthodontics, Dr. Sharma and our team see patients every day who feel a little sore after getting braces or an adjustment. The good news? It’s completely normal, it doesn’t last long, and we have easy ways to make you feel better right away.

Why Do Braces Cause Discomfort?

1. Pressure on Teeth and Jaws

Braces move teeth by applying steady, gentle pressure. That pressure is what straightens your smile, but it also makes your teeth and jaws feel sore—especially in the first few days after we place or tighten your braces.

2. Irritation from Brackets and Wires

The metal (or ceramic) brackets and wires can rub against the inside of your cheeks, lips, and tongue. At first this creates small scrapes or sores. Within 1–2 weeks your mouth toughens up and the irritation almost always disappears.

You’re not alone—every patient goes through this, and Dr. Sharma and the BirchTree Orthodontics team in Newark are here to help you every step of the way.

Simple Ways to Relieve Braces Discomfort

  • Orthodontic wax (we give you plenty!): Pinch off a tiny piece, roll it into a ball, and press it over the bracket or wire that’s bothering you. Instant smooth barrier.
  • Warm salt-water rinses: Mix ½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and swish for 30–60 seconds, 2–3 times a day. It soothes cuts and reduces swelling fast.

For General Soreness and Pressure

  • Stick to soft foods for a couple of days: Yogurt, smoothies, soup, mashed potatoes, pasta—anything that doesn’t require heavy chewing.
  • Over-the-counter pain relief: Ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) usually knocks out the soreness. Follow the label or ask us what’s best for you or your child.
  • Cold compress or ice pack: Wrap ice in a towel and hold it against your cheek for 10–15 minutes. It numbs the area and brings down swelling.

After an Adjustment Appointment

The day you get your braces tightened is usually the most uncomfortable, but the soreness almost always fades within 3–5 days. Use the same tips above and you’ll feel much better quickly.

Most patients tell us the first week is the toughest—after that, you barely notice your braces!
